Delay Node (Smart Timing)

The Delay Node pauses a flow for a specified amount of time before continuing to the next step. It is essential for natural conversation pacing, and time-based automation logic.

You can access the Delay node inside the Flow Builder

👉 learn about what is Flow Builder

What the Delay Node does

  • Temporarily stops flow execution
  • Waits for the configured duration
  • Resumes the flow automatically after the delay ends

Typical use cases:

  • Waiting before sending a follow-up message
  • Sending daily news or updates at controlled intervals
  • Delivering educational content on a daily, step-by-step basis (for example, lesson-by-lesson or season-by-season)

Delay duration options

Depending on your setup, a Delay can be configured Up to 24 hours, with a recommended maximum of 23 hours to safely stay within Instagram’s 24-hour messaging window.

Important notes:

  • Delays are counted from the moment the flow reaches the node
  • Delays continue even if the user does nothing during that time

Smart Delay vs Instagram 24-Hour Rule

Instagram enforces a 24-hour messaging window.
This rule directly affects how Delay Nodes should be used.

Understanding the 24-hour rule (quick recap)

You can send automation messages within 24 hours of a user’s last interaction, such as:

  • Sending a DM
  • Replying to a story
  • Tapping a button or selecting a Quick Reply

After the 24-hour window:

  • Automated messages may fail
  • Messages may be blocked or silently dropped

What is a “smart” delay?

A smart delay is a delay that:

  • Respects the 24-hour window
  • Avoids sending messages too late
  • Prevents sudden bursts of messages

Bad delay example:

  • Delay = 24 hours
  • Then send multiple messages in a row

Good delay example:

  • Delay = up to 22 hours
  • Then send a reasonable number of follow-up messages (text, images, or other content)

Using Interaction to Extend the 24-Hour Window

Note: If you plan to follow up again, include a button or Quick Reply in the follow-up message to encourage user interaction and refresh the 24-hour messaging window.

By refreshing the 24-hour window through user interaction, you can safely run recurring automations such as daily news updates or scheduled daily content delivery.

Time-Based Automation Strategies

Delay Nodes enable time-based strategies when used thoughtfully.

Strategy 1: Cooling-off periods

Use delays to:

  • Give users time to read content
  • Avoid overwhelming them
  • Make automation feel human

Example:

  • Send info message
  • Delay 5 minutes
  • Ask a follow-up question

Strategy 2: Sequenced messaging

(Daily news updates or scheduled daily content delivery)

Delays can be used to build safe, time-based message sequences that deliver content gradually while staying within Instagram’s 24-hour messaging rules.

Example sequence structure

A typical daily sequence can be designed as follows:

Message 1
→ Delay (up to 22 hours)
→ Message 2 (includes a Button or Quick Reply)
→ Delay (up to 22 hours) placed on the Button or Quick Reply handler
→ Message 3

Why this structure works

  • The first delay keeps the flow safely within the 24-hour window
  • The Button or Quick Reply in Message 2 encourages user interaction
  • User interaction refreshes the 24-hour messaging window
  • The delay placed on the button/Quick Reply handler ensures:
    • The next message is sent only after interaction
    •  If the user does not tap the Button or Quick Reply, the flow does not continue, preventing messaging outside the 24-hour window
    • The sequence can safely continue into the next day

This pattern allows you to send daily or scheduled content without breaking messaging limits.

Common use cases

  • Daily news or updates
  • Educational content delivered step by step
  • Multi-day onboarding messages
Important reminder
Sequenced messaging should feel helpful, optional, and easy to stop.
Never force users through long sequences without interaction.
